"It does such a wonderful job of making my period hassle-free"

Meet Megan, one of our lovely ambassadors, who very kindly took the BeYou Menstrual Cup out for a test drive...

Practice and insertion

Before receiving the BeYou menstrual cup I had only ever used one for short periods of time; usually when working in the pool because if felt like the safest option. But now after receiving this one, I knew I was even more motivated to try it. My first thought was to practice insertion because it was slightly bigger than my old one. I found it easiest to practice either sitting on the toilet or in a squatting position, this meant it was better aligned for insertion. It took me a few goes to find the insertion comfortable. Initially, I had trouble with making it pop open. I found some useful tips for a lot of common issues with menstrual cup insertion, such as using warm water or coconut oil as a lubricant. If it’s your first time using a menstrual cup take it out in the shower as that can be the most comfortable place to break the seal. I tried not to get discouraged because it took me a few goes to get the right fit, but once it did it was great. At first it can be daunting but once it works it can be a life changer. I can’t wait to see how well it will work when I am actually on my period.

First Period

I was a bit wary about using for a long period of time as the maximum time I’d ever used one had been about 3 hours for work. However, I pushed my fears aside and I used it for 5 out of my 7 day period. The first and last of my period are the lightest, so I like to try free flow without any protection. My first day using the cup, not going to lie, it was a bit of a disaster! I just couldn’t get the seal right so I kept leaking but, in the afternoon, it was a bit better and leaked less. However, since then it has been a complete success, practically no leakage and it meant not having to get up in the middle of the night to change my pad, which meant a better night’s sleep on my period for once. I did find removing the cup, when it was full, a bit tricky to begin with but after some practice, it was less messy and uncomfortable – especially when I remembered to break the seal beforehand.

One great aspect was that it was so easy to clean. All I needed to clean it was warm water followed by cold water as to avoid discolouration. I feel like in our current climate crisis menstrual cups should be a must have especially the BeYou menstrual cup. It does such a wonderful job of making my period hassle-free and it's environmentally friendly. Overall, the BeYou menstrual cup is absolutely magnificent and everyone should consider getting one!
